Does ALEXA Mini Exposure Logic Apply to ALEXA 35?

Hello,

When shooting with the ALEXA Mini, I used the following approach to manage dynamic range:

Low-key scenes: EI 200–400
Normal scenes: EI 800
Bright scenes/exteriors: EI 1200–1600

Does this make sense as a general method for distributing the dynamic range with the Mini right?

So now I’m transitioning to the ALEXA 35. Should I follow a similar logic, or does the new sensor require a different approach?

I’m about to shoot a project where the first unit will use the ALEXA 35, and a second unit will shoot inserts right after using the same fps, shutter, and T-stop. Ideally, I’d like to keep the same EI between both units. Would that work?

Thanks!

Dear PSil001,

yes, you may use the same exposure logic with ALEXA 35/LogC4.

- lower EI has more stops below neutral gray = useful for dark (= low-key) scenes
- EI 400 has (nearly) a balanced distribution of stops above and below neutral gray
- higher EI has more stops above neutral gray = useful for bright (= high-key) scenes

Best regards.

Hi,

maybe this is also helpful:

and in addition here's our LogC4 Whitepaper and our LogC website with more information about the LogC curve and colors of AWG4
